Community

“Creative power shouldn’t just benefit the individual. It should contribute to the community, where its impact can grow exponentially”

Everyone deserves to experience the creative freedom and exploration libraries offer.

Everyone’s Library (https://everyoneslibrary.org/), a national 501(c)(3) organization I founded in 2021, is my solution to address the shortcomings of traditional libraries in under-resourced communities.

We set up free, easily accessible, 24/7 outdoor libraries and distribute books to family shelters, women’s safe houses, low-income neighborhoods, and  communities across the USA lacing easy access to books.

Libraries not only serve as knowledge centers, but fuel creativity and stimulate the imagination. By providing free, permanent, 24/7 outdoor libraries, we can promote a collaborative approach that includes the exchange of books and encourages the scientific process of “experimentation,” motivating people to read new genres and ideas.

Currently, we have 21 chapter leaders who are establishing libraries and donating books in their respective states. If you are interested in starting your own chapter or getting involved, you are welcome to email us at everyoneslibrarynonprofit@gmail.com!

Statistics

●“In total, 32 million U.S. children live in “book deserts”—areas with severely limited access to books and literacy resources

●92% of U.S. public libraries charge fines, generating about $11.8 million monthly, blocking access for the vulnerable. Link : Library Late Fines as Social Inequity: Librarians Consider Ditching Due-Date Fees | Nebraska Public Media

How Can I Help My Community?

Note any need in the community. Is there something people are lacking or would benefit from? Learn about other people’s experiences by sparking conversations and talking to people outside of your comfort zone! If you pay attention and seek to learn, you will note the many ways you can help your community.

Do people need free books? Does the neighborhood need safety? Do elderly struggle with computers? Do children need free tutors? Can I create an app to help teach elementary math? Can I write books about a topic that is dear to me and share it with the community? Can I donate unused items from my house to those who may use it? Can I plant a tree to combat pollution? Can I volunteer at an animal hospital? The potential to serve your community is vast. And all it takes is one initial spark!

Resources to Find Community Projects

  • Volunteermatch.org: VolunteerMatch connects you with volunteer organizations working in your areas of interest
  • AllforGood.org: This platform gathers volunteer and service project listings nationwide
  • UN Online Volunteering: You can even volunteer remotely and find ways to help other communities at home! UN presents a variety of virtual volunteer opportunities.
  • JustServe.org: A way to find local volunteer opportunities within your community that match your schedule and passions!

There are many more resources to help you get involved, but starting small is the best practice to create sustainable and meaningful ventures! While you volunteer I encourage you to speak to as many people as possible (volunteers, organizers, community members) to learn more about their experiences. You never know, one conversation might spark a national venture!
